I can't really imagine that this has an effect either way. If those other domains had pagerank and seo "credit" to them, they may assist your actual site. But with all things being equal, I cant really imagine any effect...

Infact what you can do is buy hosting for one website then buy all the domain names you want and simply add them to your web hosting as "parked domains". This means that whether I enter xyz.com or xyz.net I go to the exact same website with each one.
